3 Perspectives Video: A Lonesome Berry
For this assignment, we were tasked with creating a four-seven minute video that utilizes three unique perspectives. In retrospect I'm not sure how strict the length was given that some projects utilized a shorter runtime effectively, but I decided to tackle a four minute film. I had recently gone through some tough times in my personal life, and so the idea was born to explore a vague "loss" of a loved one.
In brainstorming, I knew I wanted to incorporate some animation. This ended up being a game of working smart and cutting to narration when appropriate, as completing a fake cartoon in a week was a big challenge. I'm pleased with the integration of it, with the characters on a CRT TV reacting in shock to the student abruptly leaving his room. Voicing the characters and making the audio sound vintage was also a lot of fun!
I'm less of an on-camera actor than a voice actor, but I tried to do my best with the storyboards I had made and the idea in my head. I filmed in the perspective of the cartoon characters, an onlooker, and the POV of the student. Shot composition in a live-action format is a weaker ability of mine compared to when I draw a scene, but I used a tri-pod to film around my college campus and ended up with some angles that surprised me!
One of the most challenging parts of this project was the editing. I had all my footage, but organizing it in a coherent way that reached a solid four minutes took some creative thinking and shot choices. I enjoyed finding copyright-free music to add to my scenes and I'm happy to have made this short. It feels a bit heavy-handed to me since I acted in it and found some moody music, so I'm unsure of how my emotions toward it will change with time. It was a more raw piece that I might feel more comfortable keeping on the private side. In future pieces driven by earnest emotion, I will probably feel more comfortable when its two actors or drawn characters that do not physically resemble me as much.
Here is the film if you wish to watch it!
